Gluhwëin

Perfect for a cold Winter's night.

Gluhwëin is also known as mulled or spiced wine. We first tasted gluhwëin in Vienna, Austria where the temperature was near freezing and every Christmas market seemed to have a stall selling it. Maybe not suitable for a Southern hemisphere Christmas but perfect for those Northern Christmases.

Times

Total:
15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (3 cups) of dry red wine
  • 3 Tbs sugar
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ Tbs cinnamon
  • 8 whole cloves

Method

  1. Place all ingredients in a saucepan.
  2. Stir over a low heat until hot.
  3. Remove from heat and serve.

Tip

For a different type of gift:

  1. Mix up the sugar and spices and place them in a small packet, for example, small envelopes lined with foil.
  2. Buy a bottle of dry red wine.
  3. Write out the recipe for gluhwëin.
  4. Wrap up the wine, spices, and recipe as a gift.
