Low-Fat Chips

There are tons of recipes out there for low-fat chips and most use the oven, a standard technique for those of us who are counting calories.

The same method can be used to make potato chips and sweet potato chips.

Times

Preparation:
10 minutes, if you don't peel the potatoes

Cooking:
20-30 minutes

Ingredients

  • For each person, 1-2 potatoes or ½-1 sweet potato or a combination of potatoes and sweet potatoes
  • Cooking spray
  • Baking paper
  • Herbs and spices for seasoning (optional)

Follow are our favourite seasonings for potatoes:

    • Garlic flakes and oregano
    • Chilli powder or paprika

For sweet potatoes try one of the following:

    • Lemon pepper
    • Tumeric with cumin or garam marsala

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C.
  2. Wash the potatoes and sweet potatoes.
  3. Peel the potatoes and sweet potatoes if you want to.

We tend to not peel our vegetables, which saves us time.

  4. For wedges or thick chips, microwave the potatoes and sweet potatoes to partially cook them.

Approximate timings for a 1000W microwave are about 2 minutes on High for two potatoes, 1-1½ minutes on High for a sweet potato.

  5. Cut the potatoes and sweet potatoes into wedges, bars or slices.

Hubby prefers thin slices because they cook faster.

  6. Place a sheet of baking paper on a tray and spray the sheet with cooking spray.
  7. Sprinkle your selected seasonings on the paper and then place the chips in a single layer on top of the seasonings.
  8. Spray the chips with the cooking spray and then sprinkle your seasonings on the chips.
  9. Place in the oven and bake for 20-30 minutes.
